Sri Lanka: Protecting our children

PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 02 December 2007
Liberation Tigers must use the lesson of the Iyankulam tragedy to better protect our children; especially our school girls. We all know that our school girls are the favoured preys to the Sinhala-Sri Lankan military. From the early days of the liberation struggle, and by that I mean the Ahimsa days of the 60s and 70s, our school girls have been repeatedly targeted by the Sri Lankan military machine. Have we all forgotten the Sri campaign of 1957 when Sinhala thugs attempted to burn on the Sinhala 'Sri' sign onto the chests of our young girls?

Have we all forgotten the continuous anti-Tamil riots of 60s and 70s, when hot tar was repeatedly poured over the heads of our high school and university girls?

Have we all forgotten Black July 1983 when hundreds of our girls and women were brutally raped, hacked and dumped into boiling tar? Have we all forgotten the deliberate bombing of Nagarkoil School that killed more than 60 students including many school girls?

Have we all forgotten the eleven year old girl Krishanthy Kumarasamy who was raped and murdered by the Sri Lanka army occupying our beloved heartland of Jaffna? Even worse have we all forgotten the biggest tragedy of 2006 when Sri Lanka Air Force planes dropped over a dozen bombs, each weighting more than 1000kg, onto the heads of 62 of our school girls at the Sencholai children?s home.

Aren't the memories of the past painful enough? Why are we not offering the best possible protection to our young school girls?

Isn't it our collective responsibility to offer all that is necessary to keep the enemy at bay and away from our school girls? In the loving memory of the young hearts whose lives were so brutally robbed by the Sri Lankan military on Tuesday 27 November 2007.
