Trade links between Sri Lanka and India have hit a record high of US$2.5 billion this year, according to recently released figures. According to an official government report, US$2,250 million worth of goods are exported from India into Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka exports around a fifth or US$470 worth of good to its giant neighbour.
Many multinational companies with branches in Sri Lanka are also recruiting skilled workforce from India to serve in their offices.
Sri Lanka's poor tertiary education system is incapable of producing the high calibre gradates necessary to maintain branches of multinational firms, according to analysts.
