Sri Lanka: An eye for an eye in a blind world

On Tuesday of last week, the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) launched an unprovoked claymore mine attack on a school bus killing many school girls onboard. Again on the same day the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombed the Voice of Tigers radio station and surrounding areas killing a dozen people including several children. Tuesday's death toll stood at 24.

On Wednesday, suspected Tamil militants retaliated by exploding a parcel bomb at shopping centre on the outskirts of Colombo, killing almost eighteen people, some of them children.

Had those who ordered the bombing of the school bus been a little less arrogant, and had they thought for a minute of the emotional distress such a gruesome slaughter would cause in the Vanni, all the killings of the week could have been prevented. Obviously, some in the hierarchy were so sure that the Tamils were a spent force; they thought they could get away with anything, and in the end robbed more than 40 lives.

Even so, had the international community that woke up on Thursday morning to call for an end to violence and condem terrorist attacks, done the same just a day earlier to exert some sort of pressure on the Sir Lankan military to show to the Tamils that the events of Tuesday would not be repeated, at least the tragedy of Wednesday could have been prevented and almost eighteen lives could have been saved.
