Sri Lankan opposition has not agreed to a proposal of the government to shorten the budget debate on security ground. Sources said the government placed a proposal in this regard at the party leaders’ meeting at the parliament complex on Thursday.
In the meeting Chief Government Whip, Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, referred to the recent bombings that took place in Narahenpita and Nugegoda, and said that because of security threat the budget debate can be cut short but Chief Opposition Whip, Joseph Michael Perera, outright rejected this proposal, sources close to the meeting said.
Accordingly, the committee stage of the Budget will continue till December 14 as scheduled.
The UNP member said the Budget debate should be held as per schedule.
“It should not be cut short on security ground. If we do so, it will be proved we have succumbed to terrorism”, he added.
