Fifty of the more than 2,000 Tamils arrested during the weekend long cordon and search operation in Colombo and its suburbs were released today. The discharge came after Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa ordered "all innocent people" to be "released immediately".
Of the rest, still under detention around 300 of Jaffna origin are being "interrogated" at the anti-terrorist division in Boosa Camp. Another 500 Tamils of North-East origin are being held in various police stations across the capital. A majority of those under custody are Tamils of Indian origin from the upcountry.
Asked when the rest might be freed a police officer said: "There are some good Tamils but unfortunately we find that most support the LTTE." There is no timetable for the charging of release of the remaining thousands held over the weekend. Sri Lanka's emergency laws allow for the suspects to be held in detention indefinitely.
