Maradana police on Tuesday arrested two trade union activists of health sector on charge of contempt of court. Police sources said the two activists were arrested while disrupting the employees who did not heed the trade union orders. Colombo high court on Monday issued an order to 44 trade unions to halt all trade union actions for 14 days from today after hearing a petition filed by a heart patient.

The Trade Union Coalition of government health sector employees last week gave a call to observe strike throughout the island today (Tuesday) and tomorrow against the introduction of finger print machine to monitor employees’ attendance.

Sources said, despite the court orders the attendance of the employees has been very poor at all government hospitals.

It is alleged that the court order given against the trade union action was not officially communicated to trade unions.
