The Sri Lankan government on Saturday turned down fresh calls of the United Nations and leading international human rights organisations to set up UN field operations for monitoring the human rights situation in the island country.
“The government has its own mechanism to monitor human rights situation and there is no need for UN monitoring teams for this purpose. Government’s position would be conveyed to the human rights groups,” Mr. Samaraisnghe said, rejecting the UN calls that came ahead of the sixth sessions of the Human Rights Council in Geneva next week and coincides with Human Rights Day tomorrow. UN Human Rights Commissioner Louise Arbour made such appeal along with the New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the London-based Amnesty International (AI). The HRW and the AI wrote a letter to President Mahinda Rajapakse on Friday making a freash call for the establishment of the UN monitoring mechanism while Ms. Arbour sent a letter to Mr. Samarasinghe.
