The passenger ship service between Trincomalee and Jaffna is to be suspended from January 7 due to repairs to be carried out in the vessel "Green Ocean." The last service from Trincomalee Harbour to Jaffna will take place on January 5 Saturday and from Jaffna to Trincomalee on January 6 Sunday, Trincomalee divisional secretariat sources said.

The ship which arrives in Trincomalee on Monday would sail to Colombo for repairs.

DS sources said that the vessel will be docked in Colombo Harbour for about ten days for repairs. However the DS sources have failed to give the exact date for the resumption of the passenger ship service between Trincomalee and Jaffna.

Passenger ship service is the only mode of transport between Trincomalee and Jaffna for ordinary civilians to travel to and from Jaffna since the closure of A 15 land route following the renewed war that started between the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the year 2006. Affluent people fly between Ratmalana in Colombo and Palaali military airbase in Jaffna using in private airlines.
