For the people, who believed that the
dawn of the New Year would usher in peace and prosperity, the New Year
has dawned with the sad news of an imminent full scale war.
On the Thai Pongal Day, every
year, Tamils light their hearths with hope. But this year, with the
abrogation of the CFA taking effect from January 14th, it is not going
to be an year of hope but an year of trials and turbulences, troubles
and turmoil.
The CFA which had been a mere dead letter has been reduced to ashes
with its abrogation. A Colombo based diplomat, who felt the pulse of
the country's politics, pointed out that he expected the CFA to be
abrogated with Rajapakse coming to power in 2005 Nov, but it is a
wonder that it had lasted for more than 2 years.
The CFA which had been a dead letter all these years is going to be
dead legally from Jan 14th. But, all these years, both parties to the
CFA blamed each other for the violation of the CFA.
But, the unique feature was that none of the two parties to the CFA was
prepared to declare that it would withdraw from it in order not to earn
the displeasure of the international community. Yet, the Colombo
government has, now, braved the situation and declared to abrogate it.
Without a comfortable majority in Parliament and without the confidence
to face polls to be returned to power, the government intends to retain
its power by appeasing the JVP.
On the one hand, there are political parties of the south demanding a
military solution, and on the other hand, there are defence
authorities, who beat the war drums. The government is caught in this
snare. That, in brief, is the political reality today.
