Sri Lanka: Jaffna University undergrad released in tortured state

The final year science undergrad arrested in Sri Lanka Army (SLA)
cordon and search operation Thursday from his home in Koanamalay,
Koa'ndaavil in Jaffna was brought in a vehicle Sunday midnight and
released in a severely tortured state near his home, Jaffna University
Student Union (JUSU) sources said. Jaffna University VC confirmed the
release of the arrested undergrad.
Balasubramaniam Mayooran, 26 is the student released Sunday
midnight near his home with signs of assault and torture on his body.
The
newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Jaffna University, Prof.
N.Shanmugalingan and Deans of Faculties had made urgent requests to SLA
authorities in Jaffna to immediately release Mayooran.
Jaffna
University Student Union, Science Faculty Student Union and other
similar organizations also had appealed to the SLA in Jaffna urging the
immediate release of Mayooran.
The SLA had not informed the arrest of the undergraduate to Jaffna University authorities.
Mayooran
teaches in a private education centre during spare time to support his
family which depends on his income, the Student Unions had pointed out
in their appeal to the SLA in Jaffna.
