The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Jaffna University, Prof. N.
Shanmugalingan, made urgent request to Sri Lanka Army (SLA) authorities
in Jaffna to immediately release Balasubramaniam Mayooran, the final
year Science faculty student arrested at his home Thursday in a SLA
cordon and search operation, administrations officials of Jaffna campus
said.
Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU), Science Faculty Student
Union and other similar organizations also have appealed to the SLA in
Jaffna urging the immediate release of Mayooran, according to student
leaders.
The SLA had not informed the arrest of the undergraduate to Jaffna University authorities.
26-
year-old Mayooran teaches in a private education centre during spare
time to support his family which depends on his income, the Student
Unions had pointed out in their appeal to the SLA in Jaffna.
The
SLA authorities, however, have not responded to the requests made by
the University authorities and students until Monday, according to
student leaders.
