Being perturbed over the abrogation of the CFA by the government, the international community has been expressing serious concern and fears through its statements in recent days. These countries have expressed their fears that conflicts will intensify. They are disturbed that the opportunity for finding a political solution will be lost.
But, President Rajapakse has reiterated that the abrogation of the CFA
would not in any way nullify the peace efforts. As usual, he has not
listened to the advice of the international community.
The international community, which belatedly issues statements and
reports, had failed in taking adequate measures to prevent the
government from taking such a stand. Time and again the international
community was satisfied with merely making statements. It had not acted
properly and promptly to remove hurdles in the peace process or to
adopt an approach that can contain violence in the country. Its failed
approach had been a source of encouragement to the Lankan government.
The military operations that were undertaken to weaken the LTTE has led
the government to rely more and more on a military solution to the
ethnic problem. Such military operations have failed to create an
appropriate atmosphere to find a peaceful settlement.
The south gets ready for a full scale war. This is clearly reflected in
the government's position that a political solution is feasible only
after defeating the LTTE.
The international community has failed to realize the need to adopt and
implement policies and measures to dissuade the government from
engaging in military solution.
