'Ranil was trying to control the LTTE through a subtle move exerting pressure in the guise of peace with the connivance of the international community. But, the LTTE was careful so as not to fall a prey to what he called an international safety network. On the other hand, we succeeded in making use of the talks to internationalize the problems of the Tamils' - These were the words expressed by Dr.Anton Balasingam, the LTTE Ideologue, regarding the peace talks, he participated in.
Dr.Balasingam was one of the architects of the Ceasefire Agreement.
Ranil's government was trying to trap the LTTE in a snare. That's why
the LTTE succeeded in defeating Ranil in his contest at the
Presidential polls and survived without being trapped in a clever snare.
Now, the Lankan government itself has abrogated the CFA. Ranil deplores
the government's move in the following words. 'On numerous occasions,
the LTTE admitted that they were caught in an international safety net.
Now it is the government of Sri Lanka that is liable for the abrogation
of the CFA.'
Now, Ranil himself has confessed that he was subtly and secretly trying
to trap the LTTE in an international safety net and that he succeeded
in his endeavour to some extent.
He blames President Rajapakse for gravely undermining the country's
reputation by the abrogation of the CFA. Having read the full text of
the report of the UNP, the people will appreciate the stance taken by
the LTTE during the last presidential polls.
Let me quote the words of Anton Balasingam in regard to the future of
the country. 'Will this congenial environment of the peace be sustained
to find a peaceful settlement of the Tamil problem or will the war
break out and will the Tamils be forced to fight for their right to
self determination and opt for self rule? It can be said with certainly
that it is the communal forces of the Sinhala country that will
determine the future course of the political history of the Tamil land'.
Colombo has taken a firm stand by the abrogation of the CFA and what next?
