Dozens of Sinhalese have escaped a bus bomb attack in Mount Lavinia, south of Colombo on Saturday morning. A powerful bomb exploded onboard the bus that was travelling from Colombo to Moratuwa, at around 10.55am.
According to early reports, all passengers on board had already been evacuated after a fellow passenger had warned the bus conductor of a suspicious looking parcel.
Eighteen people who were standing along the road were injured when the bus blasted into a fireball, Sri Lanka police say.
Most of the injured had suffered from minor wounds, according to Kalubowila Hospital where they have been admitted.
Analysts say that the bus blast is retaliation for Friday's bomb attacks on Tamil villages that killed eight people including three children.
As this attempt has failed, analysts warn that another bus may explode in the south this weekend.
