Minister of International Development Erik Solheim said Wednesday that an urgent meeting between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger rebels was needed to prevent the country from sliding back into war. Solheim, the architect of the peace process, said in a statement released in Colombo that increasing violence was putting the truce at risk and called for immediate talks.
"The
high level of violence and the tragic loss of life are putting the
cease-fire at risk and will make it very difficult to secure further
progress in the peace process," Solheim said.Solheim said Norway had no
preference for where talks should be held, although the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the government continue to bicker over the
venue and the issues to be discussed. There was no immediate comment
from the LTTE or the government on Solheim's statement.
