Monday, 27 March 2006

Just a few weeks after the Kumarathurai Brothers, Mathi and Vanthanan went on Danish TV to accuse the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) of being involved in unlawful activities in Denmark, the same TV show has aired allegations against the Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO). The first show, aired on 12 March 2006 met with heavy criticism from around 11 000 Danish Tamils who complained to DR1 for airing baseless allegations made by two prominent agents of the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL).

Danish Tamils also launched a campaign to spread awareness about the Kumarathurai family and their unlawful activities. Tamils accused the Kumarathurai family of being at the pay of foreign sources, and spreading false propaganda to impede the Tamil struggle for freedom.

Sources from Denmark said that despite the protests the said show has in its latest episode decided to put forward allegations against the TRO. Allegations included that the TRO was a LTTE proxy and that the TRO has not accounted for all the money collected in Denmark. Sentiments echoing those voiced by JVP, JHU and other Sinhala extremists.

TRO is a registered Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in Sri Lanka and is the largest working in the war torn North-East. TRO works with UN agencies, international NGOs, and Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora to carry out relief, reconstruction and development works in the North-East.

Danish Tamils complained that the said show failed to acknowledge any of the good work done by the TRO in Sri Lanka and that the two people who appeared on the show were Mathi Kumarathurai and Kavitha Kumarathurai, who had covered their faces because the Kumarathurai family is now recognized by many Danish people as being anti to the Tamil freedom struggle.

Danish Tamils said that they will soon launch a campaign in Denmark to clear TRO’s name, highlight the good work done by TRO and also publish all accounts as soon as auditing is completed in April.
