Lanka navy fires at Indian fishermen PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 19 June 2006

A Tamil fisherman from Rameswaram suffered bullet injuries when the Sri Lankan navy allegedly opened fire off the Danushkodi coast early Sunday morning. The fisherman identified to be Namburajan has been admitted at the Government Medical College Hospital in Madurai and is said to be critical.

The police, who have registered a case, also informed that about 800 Tamil fishermen were fishing in mid-sea when the Sri Lankan navy fired at them.

Over the past two decades more than 200 Indian fishermen have lost their lives in similar mid-sea encounters, and with the escalating violence between the Lankan Army and the LTTE, there is a growing concern that lives of Indian fisherman could be in danger. (With PTI inputs)
