Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi says he will discuss with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the attacks on Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan security forces. Karunanidhi told reporters that he will take up the issue of the attacks in the waters around Katchchathivu island last weekend besides the flow of Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka in the wake of violence there.
The Chief Minister was speaking to journalists here Monday night. "Please address the question to New Delhi," was Karunanidhi's response when a persistent media wanted to know if India would play a Norway-like role in negotiating peace between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Asked if the Tamil Nadu government would face the situation if refugees came in thousands, Karunanidhi said: "If I said so, it will be like inviting them." Grilled about the attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy earlier in the week, Karunanidhi said: "A full stop should be put to this." Asked what kind of steps should New Delhi take to end this, Karunanidhi diplomatically said: "Whatever action they take will be 'an action', we will see what action they take."
