Around 200 Sri Lankan criminals -all ethnic Sinhala- serving prison sentences in Lebanon are to be freed today under a common pardon for foreign prisoners, reports from the war ravaged state said.
Of the Sri Lankans, three were serving life sentences for serious offences, reports added. A majority of the Sinhala prisoners are believed to be women who went to Lebanon to work as domestic servants to middle class Lebanese families.
A Sinhala woman was killed during an Israeli air raid earlier in the week. Currently, more than 80 000 Sri Lankans remain abandoned in the Lebanon.
