U.K. Men Facing Terror-Training Charge Denied Bail PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 15 September 2006

Two men were denied bail today by a London court after being charged with offenses including providing terrorism training. Mohamed Hamid, 48, is facing 12 charges, including incitement to murder non-Muslims and providing weapons and terrorism training. Kibley Da Costa, 23, is charged with providing terrorism training and attending training camps near London. The men appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates Court.

Hamid and Da Costa, both from London, are among a dozen men to appear in court this week out of the 14 arrested across the city on Sept. 1 and Sept. 2. The arrests were made after months of surveillance by U.K. police and the domestic spying agency MI5. Two of the suspects have been released without charge.

District Judge Nicholas Evans remanded both men in custody. Hamid will next appear in court Sept. 29 and Da Costa will attend a hearing on Oct. 13, the judge said.

The men weren't connected to the London suicide bombings on July 7, 2005, or to a suspected plot to blow up trans-Atlantic airliners bound for the U.S. from Britain, police said.

A third man, unconnected with the 14 arrested earlier this month, also appeared today. Akber Butt, 19, from West London, was charged last night with possessing information and articles that may be use in acts of terrorism.

Evans allowed him bail and said he will be released when a number of conditions set by the court are met.
