Retired Gen. Edip Baser, Turkey's newly appointed special envoy in fighting terrorism, has said that it was out of question that he would negotiate with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) terrorist organization. Turkey's coordinator on counterterrorism shared his impressions on the meeting he had with the U.S. special envoy Joseph Ralston with the Turkish press. Baser remarked that he was happy to see Ralston as determined in the fight against the PKK, adding that the details of the partnership between the two allied countries would be clearer in upcoming days. In response to a question on the possibility of his holding talks with the PKK, Baser underlined that it was out of question. "Do not even think about it [negotiating],†he strongly emphasized. Former Deputy Chief of the Turkish General Staff and 2nd Army Commander Baser was appointed by the government as Turkey's special envoy on countering terrorism, following the U.S. appointment of former Air Force Gen. Joseph Ralston in late August to coordinate the U.S. engagement with Turkish and Iraqi governments in the fight to eliminate the terrorist threat of the PKK and other terrorist groups operating in northern Iraq and across the Turkey-Iraq border.
