The outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which uses northern Iraq as a base to carry out attacks against Turkey, has been named a major threat to Middle East stability.

A commentary published in the Washington Post claimed that while the world focused on the resistance in Iraq and Hezbollah, the PKK was also a major factor that threatened the stability in the Middle East due to lack of authority.

The article, written by Lenore G. Martin, said that the measures taken by the U.S. administration so far were insufficient and harsher measures should be taken against the PKK.

The article explained that the terrorist organization planned attacks toward Turkish security forces in southeast Anatolia and civilians in different places around Turkey, and Turkey is determined to stop the organization, which killed more than 30,000 people.

Turkey sent forces to the Iraqi border and will probably enter northern Iraq, the article explained, stressing that Turkish intervention in the region may cause chaos in some part of Iraq and spoil the stability in the region.

If the U.S. does not react to Turkey’s aim to enter in Iraq, confusion will increase in Iraq, and relations between the U.S., which has future plans for the region, and Iraqi Kurds will be harmed, the article claimed.

It was also claimed that if Washington opposes a possible Turkish military intervention in Iraq, it could undermine its relations with Turkey, which has a strategic location in the region at a time when Iran and the U.S. have serious conflicts.
