Nantes, France- A 250-kilogram aircraft bomb from the Second World War was defused by bomb experts in the centre of the western French city of Nantes Sunday, police said. The city had been evacuated to a radius of 540 metres from the site where the US bomb was found.
Some 20,000 people were taken to safety early Sunday morning, with some elderly residents forced to leave their homes.
A siren was sounded to announce the successful defusing of the bomb in the early afternoon when residents were allowed to return to their homes, the local police prefecture said.
The bomb was uncovered during construction work near the university hospital.
