A report of a survey for the last four years, conducted on a request from Koffee Annan, regarding violence against children world-wide was released on Wednesday (11th October). This report, the first of its kind, deals with the basic causes of violence against children and the impact on them.
The report states that violence against children is unacceptable and
that the world cannot be silent over the abuse of children that has
been going on for several decades.
The report stresses on priority to
the security of children.
The UN report unfolds violence unleashed on children physically,
sexually and psychologically.
This report refers to violence on
children at homes in societies and in institutions at different stages
of their lives.
The report reveals that 14% of the children are forcibly subjected to
sexual abuse and that the victims later suffer mentally too. 80% to 93%
of the children undergo physical torture at homes.
For the girls who
are compelled to get married before the age of 18, homes are torture
camps.
In twenty five developed countries, 36% of the women and the 29% of the
men had been sexually abused in their childhood.
1.2 million Children
are abducted every year. It is a pity that a large number of the
incidents of violence against children are found to be acceptable by
the society and considered to be legitimate.
The report creates an awareness of the violence against children and
states that this is a big challenge in today’s world.
The report
recommends that a special UN envoy should be appointed to take
appropriate measures globally to arrest violence on children.
It also
recommends that commissioners must be appointed at the national level.
It must be stressed that violence against children is a violation of human rights.
