<description>Recently a well written article was published titled “Dialogue as a healthy paradigm to achieve peace” gave some to finding solutions to the conflict. At least some of the Singhalese people seem to have understood the root causes of the conflict and started addressing it in a fairly neutral concept. But, the authorities in the government does not seem to care much for these wise thoughts and comments expressed by these people. There seem to be more and more atrocities being committed as it is takes the country from a failed state to a disaster.
Apart from indiscriminate aerial bombing of Tamil civilian areas killing innocent civilians and destroying livelihood and properties, rape of women folk and other crimes, take a look at the latest comments from international commissions and observers and incidents that have taken place:
- the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour in her final press conference lamented the dire state of human rights in the island and called for independent - i.e. external - human rights monitoring - the international community keeps mum, given that the abductions, disappearances and extra-judicial killings are continuing. The Sri Lankan government do not agree to external rights monitoring; so the abuses continue
- the subhuman immoral behaviour of SLA who have indulged in despicable acts of displaying naked bodies in public
- An independent UN human rights expert has said that brutal practice of torture is widespread and “prone to become routine.”
The government says they have a just devolution package but is unable to put it forward and simultaneously the SLA is indulging in killing and immoral acts and behaviours. Wonder if the government is sincerely interested in a peaceful just solution.
