Some have even called it as a provocative act by the Sri Lankan government and called on the international community to impose sanctions on the SL government for failing to deliver a reasonable solution to legitimate aspirations of the Tamil community. Many had also pointed out the deteriorating human rights record in the country as a result of government’s actions and called upon the EU, India and the US to adopt a fair approach which can bring about an honourable end to the conflict. But calls need to come from the Heads of governments. Except for Hillary Clinton who had indirectly referred the LTTE as freedom fighters and Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew who had referred Sri Lanka as a failed state, the others are merely advising the Sri Lankan government to put forward a credible devolution package to the Tamils as they do not want to embarrass the Sri Lankan government. On the other hand, looking at the of the reaction of the Singhalese government and the despicable behaviour of armed forces where the Singhalese leaders danced at the President’s residence with liquor and celebrated the death of the chief spokesman of the rebels who is regarded as a moderate and a man of peace, celebrating killing and destruction of innocent lives and their properties (Thoppigala incident), killing school girls by aerial bombing (the outrageous Senchocholai bombing by the Air Force) and indulging in despicable acts of stripping bodies of people killed in the conflict displaying them nakedly in public (Anuradhapura Air base attack), one wonders if the government has the maturity or the intelligence to understand such signals to adhere to the wisdom words of world leaders.
