<description>The road to peace and ending the ethnic conflict is far from over. Reasons:
1.the Co-chairs have decided to sit quiet until the government and the opposition (both sides being loggerheads but each taking different paths but the direction is the same – ethnic cleansing of the Tamils) arrive at a solution on devolution of power to the Tamils
2.in the Thoppigala victory celebrations, the manner of behaviour of Rajapakse is nothing but of overbearing dictator, which did not symbolize at all a person of a noble character or a statesman. Great people are those who are show magnanimity in victory. Obviously, he did not possess any such qualities and has proven no difference to that of his predecessors using genocidal techniques and forcing a one sided solution on people under the threat of mass murders, ethnic cleansing and destruction of their properties.
Such is the person who has been given the task of coming up with a credible package of devolution of power for the Tamils, not withstanding the fact his earlier proposal was totally meaningless and rejected by all parties.
3.The military and financial aid provided by the major powers notably the US led to the government committing untold atrocities and crimes without any due regard to law or morals on the Tamils (official figures put the figure to 70,000 lives mostly Tamils) and displacement to more than half a million. Still the Co-chairs and the International community instead of restraining the government and putting pressure to restart the peace process let the genocide continue.
The only way forward for peace is to restart the CFA; the Co-chairs should take the initiative to bring the parties of conflict to the negotiating table and take the step to formulate a credible peace solution where the people’s aspirations are resolved point by point and bring about a self devolution package acceptable to all parties.
